Tour overview

A camel trek in Merzouga is one of the best things to do in Morocco. Riding a camel across the Erg Chebbi dunes is a peaceful and beautiful experience. These dunes are the highest in Morocco and some of the tallest in North Africa. Their golden sand makes the desert look like a sea of waves.

During the trek, you can stop to take photos of the dunes, camels, and wide desert views. The sunset is the most special moment, when the sand changes colors from yellow to orange and red. It is the perfect time for pictures and memories.

At the desert camp, you will be welcomed with mint tea. You can walk on the dunes, enjoy the quiet, or try sliding down on a sandboard for fun. Spending the night in Erg Chebbi is magical — the silence, the music, and the starry sky make it an unforgettable desert adventure.

What should I know before booking the camel trek in Merzouga?

  1. We provide free sandboards at the camp, perfect for anyone who wants to add a little adventure to their desert experience. Sliding down the soft golden dunes is a lot of fun and makes for great photos. However, it is important to know that climbing back up the dunes can be tiring, especially on the higher ones, so be prepared with comfortable shoes and water.
  2. Your stay in the desert also includes dinner and breakfast, freshly prepared by our team. We serve traditional Moroccan dishes such as tagine, couscous, and fresh bread. You can enjoy your meals in the restaurant tent or outside under the stars. If you have special dietary needs, such as vegetarian or vegan meals, please let us know in advance, and we will be happy to prepare them for you.
  3. We offer two types of accommodation: Luxury Camp and Standard Camp. The luxury option includes spacious private tents with comfortable beds, private showers, and toilets for extra comfort. The standard camp provides cozy tents with shared bathroom facilities, offering a simpler but authentic desert experience.
  4. The camel trek is one of the highlights of the trip, but it can be a bit bumpy. To make the ride more comfortable, we recommend wearing long pants and closed, comfortable shoes. Shorter camel rides are available for guests who are not used to riding camels. For safety reasons, camel rides are not recommended for pregnant women, people with serious back or hip problems, and travelers over the age of 70.

Tour itinerary

1st day everning: Our office in Merzouga - Camel ride in the dunes - Desert Camp - Sunset

The camel trek in Merzouga starts around 16:00 during winter and around 18:00 during summer and hot months. We will meet at our office in Merzouga, where you will park your car, use the bathroom, get prepared for the tour. You will ride the camels across the Erg Chebbi dunes, the tallest and most famous dunes in Morocco. These golden dunes are some of the highest in North Africa, and their color changes beautifully during the day.

As you ride deeper into the desert, the guides will stop for photos and to let you enjoy the amazing views. One of the best moments is stopping on top of a dune to watch the sunset. The sand turns shades of orange and red as the sun goes down — a truly magical sight.

When you arrive at the desert camp, you will be welcomed with a glass of mint tea. After settling into your tent, you can walk on the dunes, relax, or try sandboarding. In the evening, a tasty Moroccan dinner will be served in the restaurant tent, with dishes like tagine and couscous.

After dinner, the camp comes alive with Berber music. The local guides will play drums around the campfire, and you can join them by drumming or dancing. At night, the sky is full of bright stars, perfect for stargazing and enjoying the quiet of the Sahara.

2nd day morning: Return to Merzouga

On the second day, you will wake up early to see the sunrise. Climb a nearby dune and watch as the first light of day shines over the golden sand. It is one of the most beautiful sights in the desert.
