Taking a private day trip from Fes to Chefchaouen is a great way to discover one of Morocco’s most beautiful and unique towns. After leaving Fes in the morning, we drive through the scenic Rif Mountains. Along the way, there will be stops to enjoy the amazing views and take photos.
Chefchaouen, often called the “Blue Pearl” of Morocco, is famous for its peaceful atmosphere and blue-painted streets and buildings. When we arrive, you’ll have plenty of free time to explore the town at your own pace.
You can walk through the charming old medina, visit the historic Kasbah (fortress), and relax in the main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam. There are also many small shops where you can buy handmade crafts, souvenirs, and traditional clothes. For lunch or a break, you can enjoy delicious Moroccan food at a local café or restaurant.
This tour is not just about sightseeing—it’s also a great way to meet local people and learn more about the culture and history of the region.
In the late afternoon, we drive back to Fes, arriving in the evening with lasting memories of this colorful and peaceful town.
The drive from Fes to Chefchaouen takes around 3.5 to 4 hours each way, so be prepared for a long but scenic journey. The trip usually lasts 10 to 12 hours in total.
Your journey begins early in the morning, around 8:00 AM. After breakfast, we depart from Fez and start our drive towards Chefchaouen. The road trip takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours each way, passing through beautiful countryside, rolling hills, and small rural villages. Along the way, you can enjoy scenic views of olive farms and the green landscapes of the Rif Mountains.
By midday, we arrive in Chefchaouen. This peaceful town is nestled in the heart of the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco, not far from the Mediterranean coast. It is best known for the striking blue color that covers most of its buildings, doors, and streets — a tradition believed to have been introduced by Jewish refugees in the 15th century.
The blue shades give the town a unique and calming feel, making it one of the most photogenic destinations in Morocco.
Once you arrive, you’ll have time to explore the town at your own pace or with a local guide if preferred. Here are some of the top highlights to enjoy during your visit:
Wander the Medina: Stroll through the narrow, winding streets of the medina, where every corner is a photo opportunity. The blue and white-washed walls create a peaceful and magical atmosphere.
Visit the Local Souks: The small markets offer handmade goods such as wool garments, woven blankets, leather products, and traditional Moroccan crafts. Unlike bigger cities, the shopping experience here is more relaxed and less crowded.
Plaza Uta el-Hammam: This is the main square in the medina, surrounded by cafés and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy a Moroccan tea or local dish while admiring the Spanish-style architecture.
The Grand Mosque and Kasbah: You can see the exterior of the 15th-century Grand Mosque, with its unique octagonal minaret, and visit the old Kasbah (fortress), which offers panoramic views of the medina and surrounding mountains.
Explore Ras El Ma Spring: Just a short walk outside the medina, this natural spring is where locals come to do laundry and relax. It’s a great place to take a break and enjoy nature.
You’ll have time to enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at one of the local restaurants. Try regional specialties such as tagine, couscous, or fresh grilled trout, which is popular in this mountainous area.
Chefchaouen is a dream for photographers. Every alley, door, and staircase offers a unique and colorful scene. Don’t forget to bring your camera or phone fully charged!
You can also use this time to relax, soak in the peaceful atmosphere, and interact with friendly locals who often greet tourists with a smile.
After a few hours of exploration and relaxation, we begin our drive back to Fez in the late afternoon. You can enjoy the mountain views once again during the return journey.
We expect to arrive back in Fez around 7:00 PM. You’ll be dropped off at your accommodation, ending a day filled with beautiful memories, stunning scenery, and cultural discovery.
The weather in Chefchaouen is cold during the winter months, especially from November to February. In contrast, July is usually the hottest month of the year.
The drive from Fes to Chefchaouen usually takes between 3.5 and 4.5 hours by car, depending on traffic and road conditions. The distance between the two cities is about 200 kilometers (around 124 miles). The road is mostly scenic, passing through the beautiful Rif Mountains, so it’s a pleasant journey for most travelers.
